In an effort to address limited opportunities for economic development in the, Indigenous artisans throughout the North showcase their skills through carvings, printmaking, sewing, metalwork, and other media. The Traditional Techniques team, representing the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and the Gwich’in Settlement Area, was awarded $500,000 to create a regional association of professional artists and crafters. The objectives of the project are to develop sustainable business ventures while improving local artisans’ skills, ensuring authentic, high quality products, and building confidence as sustainable business owners. The end result, an Indigenous-owned and operated venture with self-determined quality, products, prices, and markets that will support sustainable and culturally valuable lifestyles.
