There’s been an increase in search and rescue (SAR) cases, injuries, and deaths in Inuit Nunangat due to worsening and unpredictable environmental conditions, loss of cultural skills and knowledge, food insecurity pressures, and lack of preparedness. Youth account for many of these cases. Ujjiqsuiniq Search and Rescue Readiness Training Program aims to reduce youth-involved SAR cases by developing readiness training to build essential skills and capabilities. It will also design and deliver Inuit specific SAR preparedness training, resources, and tools to strengthen youth confidence and increase participation in community-based SAR teams. With improved preparedness and SAR capabilities, Inuit will be able to travel, harvest, work, and live on the land more safely, contributing to broader socio-cultural health, well-being, and cultural sustainability.
