Having Northern led science programs that mix traditional and local knowledge with western science stimulate and nurture Inuit youth’s interest in science-related careers, promote environmental stewardship, and build better relationships between community members and researchers. Nunami Sukuijainiq was awarded $466,000 for its land-based, hands-on science education and mentor program designed for Nunavik youth and Inuit Nunangat post secondary students. Youth from all Inuit communities in Nunavik will have the opportunity to participate in camps that combine arctic ecology, tradition and outdoor adventure. With Elders, local experts and researchers, Nunami Sukuijainiq aims to stimulate and nurture an interest in science in Inuit youth and help develop valuable skills as future environmental leaders in Nunavik.
